Who We Are

Wounds Australia is a not-for-profit company that is made up of health care professionals, supporters, and volunteers, who all have one goal in mind – to reduce the harm that is caused by wounds.  Our purpose is to promote, facilitate, educate, and support the prevention and management of wounds.

History

Wounds Australia was previously known as the Australian Wound Management Association before it was nationalised in 2015. The Australian Wound Management Association itself was established in 1994 after a committee was established to oversee its formation the previous year. Over the years we have worked hard to forge strong links with other international wound healing societies, and even helped found the World Union of Wound Healing Societies with the First World Wound Healing Congress held in Melbourne in 2000.

Journal and Newsletter

In 1993 the first edition of the journal Primary Intention the Australian Journal of Wound Management was published.  This has continued to be distributed to members quarterly and was renamed Wound Practice and Research in 2008.  This journal has international readership and publishes research, clinical practice reviews, guidelines, and case studies.  A national newsletter called DeepesTissues commenced in 2010 in collaboration with ANZBA, to provide members with details of news and events.  This has evolved to become a Wounds Australia electronic newsletter Wound Connect and remains a regular benefit of the membership, providing readers with the latest news, resources and developments in wound management.

Conferences and State/Territory-based Forums

The first national conference on wound care ‘Turning Wound Care Upside Down’ occurred in Perth, 1993, and was the catalyst for the formation of the national organisation and subsequent conference Wound Care a New Course for an Ancient Craft in Melbourne in  1994.  Since then, biennial conferences have been held in each state and territory and continue to attract national and international delegates.

A variety of educational seminars, study days, road shows and evening forums have been held across Australia over the years.  These events are now coordinated centrally and Wounds Australia offers live streaming and webinars so that there is equity for members to access education.

Throughout the journey, industry sponsorship has been vital, and both large and small companies have and continue to partner with Wounds Australia in the facilitation of events, education and our journal sponsorship.
